KARACHI: Pakistan consumers are taking the pinch as ghee and cooking oil producers hiked prices by Rs12 per kg.
A 16-kg bag of ghee now costs Rs8,550, while in the open market, they have raised the price by Rs100 per kg. In the same way, a 5-kg package of cooking oil has risen to Rs2800-2,850, up by Rs70.
Ghee is selling at Rs535 a kilogram in wholesale markets, while cooking oil is selling at Rs572 a kilogram. Traders say prices of most commodities have increased by Rs 10 to Rs 15 a liter or a kilogram.
The hike hits a broad array of well-known brands and items, ranging from Mezan and Dalda to Eva and Soya Supreme. To illustrate, Mezan Olivola Cooking Oil, available in a 10-liter can, is now Rs6,400.
Premium varieties run up to Rs 4000 per kg. Dealers are also cautioning that the constant rise in cooking oil and ghee will further put pressure on family budgets, particularly since the items are something that every Pakistani household uses.
