Iranian rial demand rises in Pakistan, rates fluctuate in informal market

KARACHI: The exchange rate of the Iranian rial has once again drawn attention in Pakistan as trading activity in the currency continues in several cities, including Karachi, Quetta, and Lahore.

According to currency dealers, the value of 10 million Iranian rials is currently being traded in Pakistan’s informal market at around Rs8,000 to Rs10,000, reflecting unusual fluctuations compared to global benchmarks.

Market experts said the local rate appears significantly different from international valuations, where the rial is reportedly far stronger against the Pakistani rupee.

In informal trading, dealers suggest that around 1,000 Iranian rials are being exchanged for Rs1, while Rs1,000 can fetch around 1 million rials, though rates vary depending on demand and location.

Analysts attribute the rising interest in the currency to two main factors: speculative investment in anticipation of future appreciation, and demand driven by cross-border trade activity between Pakistan and Iran.

They added that global political developments and potential changes in US–Iran relations could further impact the rial’s value, prompting some investors to engage in short-term trading.

Financial experts have cautioned citizens to avoid dealing with unauthorized currency traders, warning of risks including counterfeit notes and sudden market volatility. They advised that all currency transactions should be conducted through licensed exchange companies to ensure security and compliance with regulations.
