ISLAMABAD: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has increased the electricity rates by Rs3.32 per unit in view of the May 2024 fuel adjustment, here on Friday.
As per the details, the decision will put an additional financial burden on the public, who are already protesting against exorbitant bills.
The additional amount will be charged in the electricity bill for the month of July, while K Electric and Lifeline customers will be exempted from this.
A day earlier, the government of Pakistan had approved an increase in the basic electricity tariff by Rs5.72 per unit, taking it to Rs34.50 per unit.
The Federal Cabinet has approved a substantial increase in the basic electricity rates as per the terms of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). With this approval, the tariff has been increased from Rs29.78 per unit to Rs35.50 per unit.
The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) had earlier requested an increase in the average tariff to meet strong demand from the global lender. This increase will be effective from July 1 for the current financial year.
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) also expressed satisfaction over Islamabad’s economic improvement measures. During the virtual interaction, Islamabad apprised the IMF of the steps taken to meet its requirements.
