ISLAMABAD: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has authorized a decrease in electricity rates, which is a welcome relief for electricity users.
Through the monthly fuel cost adjustment mechanism, the authority has authorized a decrease of Rs1.14 per unit for October.
After a public hearing on November 26, the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) requested a reduction of Rs1.1 per unit, and the decision was formally made.
All customers who purchase more than 100 units from distribution firms (DISCOs) are eligible for the price reduction. However, electric vehicle charging stations and lifeline customers are not included. NEPRA confirmed the cut in an official notification.
NEPRA also revealed a special winter package for electricity users that would be in place from December to February. With significant discounts for both residential and commercial customers, this program seeks to encourage increased electricity use throughout the winter.
According to NEPRA, the cost of an extra unit under the winter package will be Rs26.7 more than it was the previous year. Despite not being included in the federal government’s original proposal, this package will also assist previously excluded industrial net metering and weighing consumers.
It is anticipated that the winter package and the decrease in electricity prices will relieve consumers’ financial strains and promote increased energy use during off-peak hours.
The winter package will continue to be in effect after NEPRA’s choices are sent to the federal government for implementation.
