HEC Universities Vacancies have reached nearly 40 percent in public and private universities across Pakistan.
The issue surfaced after the Higher Education Commission reviewed staffing data from institutions nationwide.
According to officials, a large number of teaching and senior administrative posts remain unfilled. These include positions of vice chancellors, registrars, deans, controllers of examinations, and faculty members.
Chairman Dr Niaz Ahmed Akhtar has directed all universities to complete the recruitment process by August 15, 2026.
He warned that unnecessary delays may lead to administrative action against the concerned institutions.
In a formal letter sent to rectors and vice chancellors, the commission instructed universities to hold regular selection board meetings. It stressed that merit-based and transparent hiring must be ensured within the given deadline.
Officials said prolonged ad-hoc and temporary appointments are affecting academic planning, research work, and student services. Decision-making processes have also slowed down in several institutions.
The commission further asked universities to improve governance standards and institutional accountability.
Education experts believe timely appointments are essential to stabilize the higher education system and maintain academic quality.
