ISLAMABAD: Several private schools across Punjab have reportedly violated government directives banning outdoor activities amid worsening smog, continuing to take students to parks and public places on recreational trips.

Despite a province-wide ban on outdoor events in educational institutions, schools have been seen organizing picnics and trips to Joyland, Jalo Park, Safari Park and Lahore Zoo, raising concerns about potential health risks for children.

Authorities have warned that exposure to severe smog levels could have adverse effects on students’ health, especially their respiratory system.

The District Education Authority (DEA) has been criticised for failing to effectively implement the government directives. According to the rules and regulations, private schools are required to take prior permission from the relevant education authorities before arranging any student trips.

However, according to media reports, many schools have ignored this requirement and are conducting trips without official approval.

In a statement, the Lahore Education Authority reiterated that the government has imposed a complete ban on outdoor activities in all educational institutions until further notice. An official warned that “strict action will be taken against schools violating the instructions.”

The provincial government had earlier announced the restrictions to protect students from the adverse effects of unhealthy air quality due to persistent smog across Punjab.
