ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) has issued new academic regulations for medical and dental students in the country. According to the regulations, students need to obtain at least 65% marks to pass and have a minimum attendance of 85% in all medical and dental colleges.

The new regulations come soon after the University of Health Sciences (UHS) in Punjab announced the same regulations, albeit slightly different in requirements where the UHS required 90% attendance and a passing score of 70%.

The UHS has caught attendance of students as well, introduced a tracking system to directly monitor student attendance, and the students respective colleges submit biometrics records on student attendance every month.

The PMDC new regulations are intended to establish standards of academic standards across a nation to ensure standards continue in parity.

Previously, the UHS decided to maintain tight grips on attendance, so they are seeking an overall better attendance to improve accountability and quality on medical training in Pakistan. These are ongoing attempts to improve medical education standards in Pakistan.

These rules highlight the PMDC’s responsibility to regulate medical education and to ensure that future health workers will meet high standards of practice.

The PMDC aims to maintain the integrity and quality of all medical degrees awarded in Pakistan by providing parameters for passing marks as well as attendance.
