LAHORE: In view of the current situation of the country Directorate of Colleges announced the closure of 16 colleges in flood-hit regions of Lahore Division for two days.
Following official notification, Shahdara, Chuhang, Bund Road, Sharaqpur Sharif, Ferozewala, Khanqah Dogran, and Narang Mandi colleges will be closed because of the flooding.
In Nankana Sahib, institutions in Mandi Faizabad and Syedwala will also be closed, while colleges in Kasur’s Kanganpur have been ordered to be closed.
The alert also ordered that electricity supply to all such colleges be cut off forthwith as a precautionary measure.
Over 6Lac people are estimated to have been hit in central and southern Punjab by the authorities. Over 150,000 residents and 35,000 animals have been shifted out, and 263 relief camps and 161 medical camps have been established. The UN states this monsoon’s death toll in Pakistan is almost three times last year’s.
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a warning of high pressure at Qadirabad Headworks, with apprehensions of floods in Hafizabad and Chiniot. Some highways and bridges have already been swept away in Sialkot, Shakargarh, and Narowal. Sections of the Kartarpur Sahib Gurdwara complex had also been flooded, and over 150 pilgrims and employees were saved.
Rescue operations are in progress with the assistance of the army, police, and emergency departments. Punjab has released Rs 900 million for relief efforts as floodwaters still threaten more districts downstream.
