WASHINGTON, DC: The Trump administration is set to introduce new limits on the length of some U.S. visas, including those for foreign students and journalists, based on global media coverage.
Since 1978, F-visa holders, predominantly foreign students, have been permitted to remain in the United States indefinitely, provided they do not drop out of school. But the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) contends that this indefinite stay has opened up loopholes and disadvantages for U.S. citizens.
According to the new rule, foreign students would be permitted to stay in the U.S. for the duration of their study program, but not more than four years. Foreign journalists, too, would be given an initial stay of a maximum of 240 days.
The DHS also mentioned that both groups, students and journalists, would be under regular scrutiny and monitoring to check how well they comply with visa rules.
