ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has announced to conduct the local body elections in Islamabad on September 29 following the year of delay.

In the statement, the ECP spokesperson said that the returning officer will display public notices for the local body elections on August 15 in the federal capital.

Moreover, the electoral body announced that the nomination papers can be submitted from August 16 to 20. Scrutiny of nomination papers will be held from August 22 to August 26, and appeals acceptance or rejection of nomination papers will be filled from August 27 to 29.

Moreover, the date for the withdrawal of nomination papers will be September 5, and candidates will be allotted election symbols on September 6, it added.

Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani presided over the case concerning Islamabad’s local body elections. During the hearing, ECP officials assured the court of their readiness to conduct elections on the specified date.

Elections in Islamabad were long overdue, the city’s previous municipal administration, finished its five-year term in February 2021. The government and the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) both failed to hold the elections within the required four months. The ECP has finally released the election timetable for Islamabad’s 101 Union Councils (UCs) after an egregious delay

This development signals progress towards ensuring democratic representation through scheduled local body elections in the capital city.
