“Power Corridors”: Political venues where Superpowers Clash

After a fierce campaign, the last round of voting is only hours away, and the lines of battle have been drawn. It’s now time to make a decision. The general elections on Thursday (tomorrow) will see over 800 seats in national and provincial assemblies up for grabs.

Nearly all of the party leaders and a number of prominent politicians are fighting for those seats in an attempt to win political glory. Let’s take a look at the arena of contention, which includes party bosses, past presidents, prime ministers, governors, and prominent party figures.

NA-130, Lahore: Yasmin Rashid, from  Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), is running against Nawaz Sharif, the Quaid of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and a former prime minister.

NA-10, Buner: PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Khan is running against Sher Akbar Khan of Jamaat-e-Islami (JI).

NA-44, Dera Ismail Khan: Ali Amin Gandapur, backed by the PTI, and Faisal Karim Kundi, the former deputy speaker of the National Assembly for the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), are involved in a three-way contest led by Maulana Fazlur Rahman, the head of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F).

PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto is up against PTI-backed Abbas Khokhar and PML-N’s Atta Tarar in NA-127, Lahore.

NA 6, Lower Dir: JI Ameer Sirajul Haq is facing Bashir Khan, who is supported by the PTI.

NA-264, Quetta: Mir Jamal Khan Raisani of the PPP is running against Akhtar Mengal, the leader of the Balochistan National Party-Mengal (BNP-M).

NA-266 Kila Abdullah-cum-Chaman: Maulana Salahuddin of the JUI-F is running against Mahmood Khan Achakzai, the leader of the Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP).

NA-248, Karachi: Arsalan Khalid, sponsored by the PTI, is running against Dr. Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, the convener of the Rabita Committee of the Muttanida Qaumi Movement (MQM).

NA-24, Charsadda: PTI-backed Anwar Taj opposes Qaumi Watan Party (QWP) leader Aftab Sherpao.

NA-149, Multan: PTI-backed Aamir Dogar squares off against Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP) patron Jahangir Tareen.

NA-253 Ziarat-cum-Harnai-cum-Sibbi-cum- Kuhlu-cum-Dera Bugti: Mir Dostain Domki of the PML-N is up against Shahzain Bugti, the leader of the Jamhoori Watan Party (JWP).

NA-33, Nowshera: PTI-Parliamentarian chief and former chief minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pervez Khattak, is running against independent Akhtar Wali Khan and PTI-backed Shah Wahid Ali Shah.

NA-56, Rawalpindi: Hanif Abbasi of the PML-N is running against Sheikh Rasheed of the Awami Muslim League (AML).

NA-207, Nawabshah: PTI-backed Sher Muhammad Baloch is running against PPP’s former president Asif Zardari.

NA-123, Lahore: Afzal Azim, backed by the PTI, and Liaquat Baloch of the JI are the opponents of former prime minister Shahbaz Sharif of the PML-N.

NA-48, Multan: Ahmed Hasan Dehar of the PML-N is up against PPP’s former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani.

PML-N Chief Organizer Maryam Nawaz is running in NA-119, Lahore, against Shahzad Farooq, who is supported by the PTI.

NA-118 Lahore: Alia Hamza, supported by the PTI, is running against former Punjab chief minister Hamza Shehbaz.

NA-117 Lahore: Ali Ijaz Butar, supported by the PTI, is competing against IPP President Abdul Aleem Khan.

NA-241, Karachi: Dr. Farooq Sattar of the MQM is running against Khurram Sher Zaman, who is supported by the PTI.

Sialkot, NA-71: Khawaja Asif of the PML-N takes on PTI-backed Rehana Dar

NA-19 Swabi: Khanzada Shahnawaz of the ANP opposes former Speaker of the National Assembly Asad Qaiser.

NA-54, Rawalpindi: Ghulam Sarwar Khan, the joint candidate of the PML-N and the IPP, is running against Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, a former interior minister.

NA-122, Lahore: PTI-backed former governor and former minister of railways Saad Rafiq of the PML-N is facing off against Sardar Latif Khosa.

NA-246 Karachi: JI Karachi Ameer Hafiz Naeemur Rehman is running against former MQM minister Syed Aminul Haque.

NA-100, Faisalabad: Samira Nisar Jat, sponsored by the PTI, is running against former interior minister Rana Sanaullah of the PML-N.

NA-11, Shangla: PTI-backed Dr. Amjad is up against Engineer Amir Maqam of the PML-N.

NA-18 Haripur: PML-N’s Babar Nawaz Khan takes on PTI secretary general Omar Ayub Khan.
