Golden Globes 2024: Christopher Nolan pays tribute to Heath Ledger

Christopher Nolan recalls accepting the late actor’s Golden Globe Award on his behalf.

During his acceptance speech at the Golden Globe Awards 2024, Christopher Nolan paid poignant respect to Heath Ledger and Robert Downey Jr.

The 53-year-old director took home the award for best director of a motion picture for Oppenheimer at the 81st annual event.

Bradley Cooper for Maestro, Greta Gerwig for Barbie, Yorgos Lanthimos for Poor Things, Martin Scorsese for Killers of the Flower Moon, and Celine Song for Past Lives were also nominated.

In his address, Christopher Nolan recalls having to accept an award on behalf of a deceased actor in 2008.

“The only time I’ve ever been on this stage before was accepting one of these on behalf of our dear friend, the late Heath Ledger, and that was complicated and challenging for me,” he went on to say.

“And in the middle of speaking, I looked down at Robert Downey Jr., who caught my eye and gave me a look of support,” Christopher added. The same look he’s giving me right now; the same love and support he’s given to so many individuals in your town over the years.”

For the blockbuster biopic, Cillian Murphy also won best actor in a motion picture, drama.

“I knew the first time I walked on a Christopher Nolan set it was different,” the Irish actor stated of the director’s ability. The amount of dedication, the complete absence of seating options for performers, I was in the hands of a visionary director, a master.”
