ISLAMABAD: Pakistan celebrated its 78th Independence Day today, Thursday, with unprecedented patriotic fervor, fueled by the recent victory of the Marqah-e-Haq against India.
The day began with a 31-gun salute in Islamabad and 21 in provincial capitals, followed by special prayers for peace, unity and prosperity.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif led the main flag-hoisting ceremony, followed by a grand military parade in Shakarparian displaying tanks, artillery, aircraft and other assets used in the successful operation.
Cultural events, traditional dances, and concerts lit up cities across the country, while in Kashmir, people joined the celebrations, reiterating their support for Pakistan and their struggle for the right to self-determination.
President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif have appealed to the nation to rise above division and work together for a Pakistan based on justice, equality and service to all.
In their Independence Day messages, Pakistan’s top leaders paid tribute to Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah and the heroes of the Pakistan Movement and congratulated Pakistanis at home and abroad.
President Zardari said that this year’s celebrations renew pride after the nation’s resilience and unity in the face of external aggression earlier this year. He hailed the victories in Marka-e-Haq and Operation Banyan Umm Mersos as proof of national resolve and reiterated unwavering support for the people of illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir by India.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif termed Marka-e-Haq as a military victory and a validation of the two-nation theory. He expressed his resolve to protect Pakistan’s sovereignty, safeguard national interests including water security, and promote dialogue for regional peace.
The chiefs of Pakistan’s armed forces also extended their congratulations, pledging to defend the country’s sovereignty, uphold the constitution, and strengthen the relationship between the armed forces and the people.
