PMD predicts potential cyclone, issues high alert for Sindh

KARACHI: A tropical cyclone alert has been issued by the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) due to a deep depression forming over the coastal belt of Sindh and a potential sea storm brewing in the northeastern Arabian Sea.

The low-pressure system, currently located 270 kilometers southeast of Karachi, is expected to intensify into a cyclone by tomorrow, bringing heavy rains and thunderstorms to various districts in Sindh, including Karachi, Tharparkar, and Hyderabad.

The cyclonic storm is predicted to move westward and southwestward, with wind speeds reaching 50 to 60 kilometers per hour, causing rough seas and advising fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea until August 31.

A press release issued by the meteorological department states that they are closely monitoring the situation and have asked authorities to stay informed through regular advisories.

Once the storm forms, it will be named “Isna,” meaning “elevated” or “higher,” as proposed by Pakistan. The department is tracking the cyclone’s progress and will provide updates on its trajectory and intensity.

Sindh issues directives on cyclone alert

In light of the cyclone alert issued today, Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has put all ministers, advisers, special assistants, and divisional commissioners on high alert, directing them to remain vigilant and proactive in addressing any challenges posed by the monsoon rains.

Additionally, all hospitals have been directed to enhance their management and ensure the attendance of their staff.

Earlier, Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon assured that the provincial government is fully prepared to tackle any emergency arising from the monsoon rains. He urged the public to cooperate with authorities in case of sudden developments.

As part of its contingency plan, the Sindh government has designated in-charges in 30 districts across the province to ensure swift response and effective management of emergencies.

Ban on fishing, swimming

Amid the PDMA alert about a cyclone emerging along the Sindh coast, authorities have banned fishermen from venturing into the sea, as well as swimming, bathing, diving, and wading in the sea/beaches and coastal areas of Karachi Division, effective from today till Aug 31 (Saturday).

According to a notification issued today by Karachi Commissioner Syed Hassan Naqvi, the ban was imposed under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) to avoid any untoward incident of drowning and to save the precious lives of the general public.

The notification stated, “sea conditions were likely to remain rough to very rough, with squally winds of 50-60km/hour”.

Commissioner Naqvi also empowered the station house officers (SHO) concerned to register cases under Section 188 of the Pakistan Penal Code against those who violate the ban.

Moreover, CM Murad Ali Shah issued instructions to the fisheries department regarding fishermen’s safety amid “extraordinary sea conditions”. “Continue monitoring the rivers, streams, and other water passages,” CM Murad ordered the water department.
