RAWALPINDI: Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir on Friday reiterated that the state will not tolerate anyone turning political differences into hatred, urging that the nation will defeat those trying to weaken national harmony.

While addressing a ceremony at the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi today to mark the country’s 59th Defence Day, the Army Chief said that the martyrs’ sacrifices have brought stability to the country and strengthened national security.

Saluting the veterans and martyrs on Defense Day, the COAS said that sacrifices in the war against terrorism will continue.

Speaking about the newly launched Operation Azm-e-Istehkam, he said it is linked to the National Action Plan (NAP) to eliminate terrorism from the country and not a counter-terrorism operation. “Civilian population will not be displaced under the new counterterrorism drive,” the COAS clarified.

“The nation has fought against the enemy along its armed forces,” he said. The Pakistan Army and the people of Pakistan shared a “heartfelt relationship”, which would continue to strengthen the resolve of the security forces.”

“Whether facing hostile foreign elements or fighting the war against terrorism, carrying out relief activities in the face of disasters, or playing a role in projects related to the country’s progress, the Pakistani nation has always strengthened the army’s resolve,” he said.

COAS Munir stressed the need to adopt harmony and unity, asking the nation to exhibit togetherness, tolerance, and forbearance in social and economic affairs.

The army chief also asked to protect the rights of minorities, granted in the Constitution of Pakistan, by overcoming religious intolerance. “Quaid-e-Azam’s principles of faith and unity are a lighthouse for the nation,” he said.

Addressing the ceremony, Gen. Asim Munir said that India’s illegal occupation of Kashmir is the main cause of instability in the region. “The establishment of sustainable peace in South Asia is subject to the solution of the Kashmir issue.”
