PESHAWAR: Health officials in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) have issued advisories and increased testing efforts throughout the province in response to nine instances of the novel strain of the COVID-19 JN.1 variant.

Six cases of the new variant have been reported from Peshawar and three from Swat.

Hospitals should do more testing for influenza-like infections, according to Dr. Arshad, Director of Public Health, in reaction to the positive COVID-19 JN.1 variant cases in KP.

Hospitals are directed to submit samples for genomic testing to the Public Health Reference Lab.

After genome sequencing, two novel coronavirus variants were found to have emerged

The Director of Public Health in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa states that JN.1 and JN1.8 are two of these variations. According to the World Health Organization, JN.1 type of COVID-19 has a three times higher transmission rate. Public advisories have urged people to take preventative action.

WHAT IS COVID-19 JN.1?

A few months ago, a SARS-CoV-2 variant known as BA.2.86 surfaced, attracting the interest of virologists because it carries around thirty times as many changes to circumvent immunization than any other variant that was circulating at the time.

Nevertheless, out of all the SARS-CoV-2 variations that were circulating in the late summer/early fall of 2023, the BA.2.86 variant never managed to take the lead. JN.1 is a descendent of BA.2.86 that has undergone one or two more mutations to gain efficient transmission capabilities. It possesses its parent’s ability to evade immunity, but it has now evolved to spread more effectively.
