ISLAMABAD: Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) launched a crackdown, taking over counterfeit medicines that were openly sold in the market.
The crackdown was on medicines used to cure fever, body aches, bacterial infections, ulcers, and anxiety, which were known to cause serious health threats to the public.
As reported by DRAP, the provincial Drug Control Departments confiscated 10 spurious medicines in various raids. These comprised false antibiotics, nasal sprays, anti-allergic medications, stomach medications, and diuretics. An alert has been issued to inform citizens promptly about the confiscated items.
Among the hazardous drugs found was a fake diuretic to eliminate excess water from the body. The drugs were found to be counterfeit through tests, and consumption of the same was life-threatening. The labels on the products that were confiscated named Karachi and Kasur-based companies, which were actually unlicensed fake manufacturing plants.
DRAP has urged citizens to inform authorities about any suspicious or fake drugs to help protect public health. Regulatory bodies have also been ordered to step up monitoring and enforcement efforts to avert the trading of such risky goods in the market.
