LAHORE: The UK has taken a historic step to protect public health by passing a new law to end smoking among young people.

The aim of this measure is to completely protect the coming generation from the harmful habit of smoking, which experts have described as a major step towards a cigarette-free generation.

Under the government’s plan, people born after January 1, 2009, will never be able to buy cigarettes or other tobacco products in the future. After receiving formal approval for this law, the path has now been paved for its implementation, and it will be implemented soon.

The bill was first introduced in 2024, which was unanimously approved by both houses of parliament after detailed deliberation. Under this law, the government will also have the power to impose stricter regulations on tobacco, vaping and nicotine products, including measures related to product flavors, packaging and restrictions in public places.

According to statistics, smoking kills about 80,000 people in the UK every year, while it significantly increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, asthma, diabetes and other dangerous diseases. In addition, it also places a huge financial burden on the health system.

Medical experts say that this law will not only improve public health but will also play a significant role in providing a safe and healthy future for future generations.
