GREECE: A 5.8-magnitude earthquake was recorded near the Greek island of Crete on Friday and Saturday night, after which panic spread in the area.
According to the European Mediterranean Seismological Center, the depth of the earthquake was recorded at about 13 kilometers (8 miles), which is considered a relatively shallow depth and for this reason the tremors were felt more intensely on the ground.
According to the report, the epicenter of the earthquake was located underground at a distance of about 69 kilometers south-southwest of the Greek city of Rethymno. The tremors of the earthquake were felt in nearby areas as well as in many parts of the island, which caused a wave of fear among citizens and people came out of their homes.
According to local authorities, the process of assessing the situation immediately after the earthquake has been started, while rescue and emergency agencies have also been kept on alert. No major damage or emergency situation has been confirmed so far.
According to geologists, these types of earthquakes are the result of the movement of tectonic plates in the region, but they are constantly monitoring the situation to deal with any possible aftershocks.
Authorities have advised citizens to remain vigilant and not to panic unnecessarily while more information is being obtained.
