Amid growing tensions with Iran, Prime Minister Kakar will shorten his visit in Davos

It was reported on Thursday that Anwaarul Haq Kakar, the caretaker prime minister, would be shortened his trip to Davos for the 54th Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) due to cross-border incursions and increased tensions between Pakistan and Iran in the region.

Soon, Pakistan’s team to the Non-Aligned Movement’s Ministerial Meeting in Kampala, Uganda, led by Foreign Minister Jalil Abbas Jilani, will also return.

The decision was made concurrently with Pakistan conducting “precision strikes” and “high coordinated strikes” on terrorist hideouts in the Sistan-o-Balochistan province of Iran.

More than a day had passed since Tehran launched drone and missile strikes in Pakistan’s Panjgur region. On the eve of Kakar’s meeting with the Iranian foreign minister at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, the strikes were initiated.

Additionally, FM Jilani received a call from Hossein Amir Abdollahian, Iran’s Foreign Minister.

The foreign minister emphasized once and for all that the attack carried out by Iran on January 16 within Pakistani territory was not only a flagrant violation of international law but also a grave affront to Pakistan’s sovereignty and the spirit of bilateral relations between Iran and Pakistan.

The foreign minister said that Pakistan has expressed its unequivocal disapproval of the act and that it has seriously harmed the two countries’ bilateral relations. Pakistan reserves the right to react to this provocative move, the foreign minister continued.

Moreover, Iranian FM Abdollahian declared on the fringes of WEF that “Iranian missiles and drones did not target any nationals of the friendly and brotherly country of Pakistan.”

“The so-called Jaish al-Adl group, which is an Iranian terrorist group, was targeted,” he stated.

Additionally, Abdollahian claimed to have convinced his Pakistani counterpart that Iran “respects” Pakistan’s sovereignty during their conversation. He did, however, warn that Iran would not think twice to take action if its interests and national security were threatened.
