Unauthorized deforestation in Gilgit; Chief Secretary suspends 44 workers

GILGIT: Ten permanent watchmen and seven forest guards have been suspended by the Chief Secretary of Gilgit, who has taken strong action against the widespread and illegal tree-cutting in Jaglot woods.

Declaring that there would be no more illegal tree-cutting in Gilgit, the Chief Secretary fired 27 temporary workers and 17 regular guards from the Forest Department for their involvement in the illegal logging.

The illegal activities involving Foresters and Range Forest Officers (RFOs) have been reported by the Forest Department to the Secretary of Forests for follow-up action.

Strict measures in Diamer and other places where illicit logging is occurring have been announced by the Forest Department. The department’s goals are to stop these kinds of things and make sure that forest resources are managed sustainably. In an effort to further demonstrate their dedication, the Forest Department declared that it would seize cars carrying illicit timber.
