Despite repeated summons, former ISI chief Lt Gen (retd) Faiz Hameed failed to appear before the Faizabad inquiry commission formed to investigate the Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) protest sit-in in 2017.

The commission summoned the former spy chief at 10.30 a.m. on Tuesday, according to sources, but he did not appear before the panel.

According to the insiders, the commission is now considering a proposal to record his statement via video link.

The former ISI chief was absent for the third time from the inquiry commission’s hearing, which had summoned him in the second week of December last year and again on December 29, according to sources. However, the first notice was unable to be delivered.

The caretaker federal government established the inquiry commission for the implementation of the Supreme Court’s 2019 Faizabad verdict in November of last year.

After the Supreme Court of Pakistan rejected the government’s fact-finding committee report, the Supreme Court of Pakistan established the probe panel, which was chaired by retired IGP Akhtar Ali Shah.

Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa stated on November 15 that the commission would have the authority to summon anyone, including former army chiefs, prime ministers, and chief justices.

On January 22, the inquiry commission must submit its report to the Supreme Court.

According to sources, the investigation panel has also summoned Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President and former Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on January 3 (today).

Former Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, ex-Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal, then-Prime Minister Fawad Hasan Fawad, and other senior officials from Islamabad and Punjab who were involved in the incident had previously appeared before the probe panel.
