Govt Imposes Section 144 across Punjab

LAHORE: The Punjab government has imposed Section 144 across the province. According to a notification issued by the Punjab Home Department, bathing, swimming and boating in accumulated rain water, rivers, canals, dams, ponds and lakes without permission has been completely banned for the next 60 days.

According to the notification, bathing in rainwater collected in streets, roads, open spaces and public places will also not be allowed. Similarly, all types of swimming in dams, rivers, canals, lakes, ponds and distributaries have been prohibited, while boating will not be allowed without prior permission from the relevant authorities.

The Home Department said that these restrictions have been imposed under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code 1898. The recent monsoon rains have led to waterlogging in various areas and high water levels in rivers and canals, increasing the risk of accidents, in view of which this decision was taken to protect the lives of citizens, especially children and youth.

The notification said that bathing and swimming in stagnant water or fast-flowing water bodies during heavy rains can prove fatal.

The administration also appealed to parents to keep their children away from rainwater, canals and other water bodies to avoid any untoward incident.

The Home Department has directed the district administration and law enforcement agencies to ensure strict implementation of Section 144, along with ordering a public awareness campaign so that citizens are aware of the restrictions and can ensure the safety of themselves and their families.
