Islamabad: The Senate of Pakistan will remain dysfunctional for at least three weeks after 52 lawmakers retired on Monday night.
The terms of over half the strength of the senators ended including Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani, Deputy Chairman, and Leader of the House Ishaq Dar.
Senate elections are usually held days before the senators’ terms expire, but that was not possible this time due to the delay in holding general elections which led to the lack of an electoral college.

The tenure of at least 11 PML-N senators, 13 from the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), seven from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), and two each from Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), Paskhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP), and National Party came to an end.
Four senators from the Balochistan Awami Party (BAP), as well as one senator from Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P), and Pakistan Muslim League-F (PML-F), have retired.
According to the ECP, polling to replace vacant vacancies will take place on April 2, and the Election Commission will announce the election timetable on March 14.
