ISLAMABAD: In a reassuring statement, Caretaker Health Minister Dr. Nadeem Jan informed the Senate on Friday that Pakistan has not yet recorded any cases of the new Covid-19 variant, JN.1 Omicron.

This announcement comes amid global concerns regarding the Omicron variant, prompting the caretaker government to take proactive measures. In response to the emerging threat, the government has decided to procure 500,000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine from the US based on recommendations from the Emergency Operation Centre’s (EOC) technical advisory group.

Dr. Nadeem Jan emphasized during the senate session that Pakistan is on high alert, closely monitoring the situation, and treating it with the utmost seriousness. The caretaker government has intensified testing for COVID-19 in alignment with the World Health Organisation’s advisory on the new variant, JN.1 Omicron.

The National Command and Operations Center (NCOC) issued an advisory to provincial health departments, drawing attention to the WHO alert and the reported rise in respiratory infections. The advisory underscores the observation of an increase in cases of Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) in the country over the past few weeks.
