People express displeasure with the small decrease in the price of petrol

ISLAMABAD: In the wake of the latest adjustment to the price of gasoline, a number of Pakistanis have voiced their dissatisfaction, arguing that the Rs8 cut does not sufficiently alleviate the suffering of the masses.

One citizen noted that it seemed like a calculated move since the gasoline price cut was made at the same time as the next general elections.

Skeptics predict that the government will return to higher prices after the 2024 elections, viewing this decrease as merely a pre-election maneuver.

Another participant highlighted a repeating pattern, adding that while increases in gas and diesel costs generally lead to inflation across numerous sectors, reductions fail to translate into lower pricing for vital necessities.

Citizens are dubious about the real benefits of price reductions since they believe there won’t be any ripple effects.

Many residents contend that the reduction that was promised is insufficient, particularly for the lower-class individuals who are still forced to pay more than Rs 250 for gas.

A concerned person voiced the opinion that a more significant discount—ideally, down to Rs200 per litre—would offer the economically disadvantaged people actual respite.

Social media users have also turned to these channels as a sounding board for their frustrations, venting their disappointment at the little effect the increase in gas prices has had on their daily costs.

In Pakistan, encompassing major cities like Bahawalpur, Lahore, Islamabad, Karachi, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, and Multan, the cost of gasoline is currently Rs259.34 per liter. However, the price of diesel remains at Rs. 276.21 a liter as it was previously.

The administration announced the cut, which will take effect on January 16, 2024, and run through the end of the month.

Notably, no decrease in the price of diesel was announced, and the present rate will remain in effect until the following fortnightly review.
