Newly elected members of the National Assembly have taken oath today (Thursday) in the inaugural assembly session amidst a chaotic inaugural session presided by Speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf.

Before the oath-taking, pro-PTI slogans were chanted in the assembly hall. SIC had already announced a protest in today’s session against the alleged rigging during the Feb 8 elections.

Independent members of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), who have recently joined SIC, came to the House wearing the face mask of PTI founder Imran Khan and they also raised slogans against Nawaz Sharif upon his arrival in the lower house of parliament.

Video and pictures went viral on social media showing PTI leaders wearing Imran Khan’s face mask. Ali Muhammad Khan, Sher Afzal Marwat, and Shandana Gulzar wore masks of Imran Khan.

During the signing after the oath-taking ceremony, the SIC lawmakers started chanting “qaidi number 804” the number given to PTI founder Imran Khan in the Adiala jail. In response, the PML-N parliamentarians started shouting “ghari chor” (watch thief) in the House.

Taking on social media platform X, Barrister Gohar Khan said, that through 5th generation rigging, parliament has been robbed of mandate by thieves, and the spirit of parliament and democracy has been hijacked.

While speaking outside the lower house, PTI’s Sher Afzal Marwat has said that alleged rigging in the Feb 8 polls has “put the future of democracy at stake”.

Today, you twisted the ROs (returning officers’) hands and made them win. When there would be elections again after five years, who would go into the public? Everyone would run after the ROs to twist their hands, Marwat added.
