LAHORE: Muneeza Basir, mother of late iconic singers Nazia Hassan and Zoheb Hassan, has died, her family announced on Saturday.

This was posted by her son, Zoheb, on social media, where he termed his mother as his “love and guide.” Muneeza left behind a legacy of love and charity.

Muneeza was also married to businessman Basir Ahmed and was well known for her work on social causes, even though her children became stars in Pakistan and India’s popular music scene. She lived a humble life despite being the mother of two very successful stars and worked behind the scenes to help charitable causes.

Zoheb Hassan also came back to Pakistan a few years back to look after his mother, who was suffering from dementia. Baseer Hassan, her husband, died in May 2020. Sadly, Muneeza had also lost her daughter, Nazia Hassan, in 2000.

Nazia Hassan, generally regarded as the “Princess of Pop” of Pakistan, became an international sensation with numbers such as Disco Deewane (1981) and later albums Boom Boom, Young Tarang, and Camera Camera. She attributed most of her success to her mother’s direction and inspiration.

Muneeza carried on the philanthropic work of her daughter after Nazia passed away, including the proposal to open a school in Karachi for street children and needy kids. She is remembered by friends and fans alike not just as the mother of two pop stars but also as a selfless, kind, and tireless social worker.
