NEW YORK: In a historic moment for the fashion industry, supermodels Alex Consani and Valentina Samapio made headlines as the first transgender women to walk the runway at the 2024 Victoria’s Secret Fasion Show in New York.

Their appearances mark a significant shift towards inclusivity in a brand that has long been criticized for its lack of diversity.

Backstage before the show, Consani shared her thoughts on the importance of representation, stating, “I’m trans, and i think it’s emphasized the need for a wider array of identities to be showcased in a space traditionally dominated by cisgender models.

Consani dazzled the audience in a shimmering silver ensemble adorned with plush angel wings and a striking slider chain belt, complemented by stunning high-heeled shoes by Rane Cavilla. In contrast, Sampaio captivated with her elegant inky navy look, featuring a mesh, crystal-studded skirt layered over stain lingerie, and dramatic, bow-like wings accentuating her tousled hair.

Both models runway debuts come to a pivotal time for Victoria’s Secret, which has been working to improve its image following past controversies.

The Bran faced backlash in 2019 after former marketing chief Ed Razek made dismissive comments regarding transgender and plus-size models. An espose in 2020 revealed a troubling culture within the company, prompting calls for change.
