Hamas disarmament has been firmly rejected by the group’s armed wing, which says such demands are unacceptable before a full ceasefire is implemented in Gaza. The statement came on Sunday from spokesperson Abu Obeida, who addressed the issue in a televised message, highlighting concerns over ongoing conflict and political pressure.
Abu Obeida said that raising the issue of disarmament at this stage is not appropriate. He stressed that discussions about weapons should not take place before the first phase of the ceasefire agreement is fully completed.
The armed wing believes that pushing for Hamas disarmament now could weaken Palestinian resistance. It also warned that such demands may worsen the humanitarian situation in Gaza instead of helping bring stability.
The issue remains a key challenge in ongoing diplomatic efforts. A United States-backed plan aimed at ending the war includes conditions related to disarmament. However, Hamas has made it clear that it will not consider this step without firm guarantees.
According to reports, the group has told mediators that any discussion about Hamas disarmament depends on Israel’s complete withdrawal from Gaza. Without such assurances, the group is not willing to move forward on this issue.
Abu Obeida also urged mediators to focus on ensuring that commitments under the ceasefire are fulfilled first. He said that failure to implement agreed steps could damage trust and delay further negotiations.
There has been no immediate official response from Israel regarding these remarks.
Meanwhile, the situation on the ground remains tense. Reports indicate that hundreds of Palestinians have been killed since the ceasefire began, highlighting the fragile nature of the agreement.
The broader conflict, which started in October 2023, has resulted in significant casualties and destruction. The ongoing violence continues to affect civilians and complicate peace efforts.
Abu Obeida also criticized Israel’s recent military actions in the region, including operations involving Iran and Lebanon. He expressed concern that these developments could further escalate tensions across the Middle East.
The Hamas spokesperson called on international mediators to take a balanced approach. He emphasized the need for fair solutions that address the concerns of all parties involved.
