The World’s Thinnest Chocolate is attracting global attention for its extraordinary texture and innovative craftsmanship, offering chocolate lovers an entirely new tasting experience.

Created by Japanese confectionery brand Maitre, the delicacy known as “Cortecia” measures just 0.03 millimetres in thickness. The ultra-thin chocolate has been praised as a remarkable feat of engineering, designed to dissolve almost instantly once it touches the tongue.

Cortecia was introduced at Maitre Bottega del Cioccolato’s store in Tokyo’s Azabudai Hills Garden Plaza in February 2024. Since then, it has earned widespread recognition for pushing the boundaries of traditional chocolate-making.

The product takes inspiration from Italy’s classic layered chocolates, but its appearance sets it apart. Each delicate sheet is carefully rolled into a cylindrical form resembling the textured bark of a tree branch. In fact, the name “Cortecia” is derived from the Italian word for tree bark.

According to reports, developing the technology required to produce such an ultra-thin layer of chocolate was no easy task. Maitre collaborated with local machinery specialists for nearly 18 months to create a custom-built machine capable of pressing and rolling chocolate to an unprecedented thickness.

Although various chocolate-processing machines exist around the world, none are said to achieve the same degree of thinness as Cortecia.

Maitre founder Matteo Cunsolo envisioned a chocolate that would provide the ultimate melt-in-the-mouth sensation. His goal was to create a texture that disappears effortlessly on the palate, enhancing both flavour and the overall sensory experience.

The result is a confection that combines culinary artistry with precision engineering, offering consumers a distinctive treat unlike conventional chocolates.
