12 killed in van-truck collision in Gujranwala road accident

GUJRANWALA: At least 12 people were killed and eleven others injured in a horrific traffic accident near Kot Ladha on Hafizabad Road in Gujranwala.

Two passenger vehicles coming from Sargodha to Gujranwala collided with a speeding dumper coming from the front near Kot Ladha, as a result of which 12 persons lost their lives on the spot while 8 were injured, a private news channel reported.

Most of the dead are said to be from the same family.

According to rescue sources, the accident took place when the driver of the dumper coming from the wrong direction fell asleep while driving. SP President Usman Tipu and other officers also reached the spot on the report of the incident.

Rescue sources further said that the passengers were on their way to Gujranwala after visiting the shrine in Sargodha.

Twelve people including a girl and 6 women were killed in the accident.

SP Saddar Usman Tipu said that the injured have been shifted to Hafizabad and Gujranwala district headquarters hospitals.

He said that preliminary information revealed that the high-speed dumper collided with two passenger vehicles. The truck driver escaped after the accident.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed condolence over the loss of precious lives in a traffic accident in Gujranwala.

In a message issued by the PM Office here, the prime minister condoled with the families of the victims and directed the Punjab government to measures for the prevention of traffic accidents.

“We will implement a programme to reduce accidents through better road construction and management measures,” Shahbaz Sharif said in a message from London.

PM Shehbaz is in the UK along with some cabinet members to discuss political affairs with Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

“May Allah Almighty grant the deceased elevated ranks in heavens and for patients to their families. Amen,” he said.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.
