LAHORE: An accountability court in Lahore has indicted Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) President Parvez Elahi in a corruption reference over irregularities in development schemes.

Judge Zubair Shehzad Kiani conducted the hearing for the reference. The NAB reference demanded a trial, stating that Elahi was found guilty in the investigation.

Former chief minister Punjab Elahi denied the charges, while the court summoned witnesses on the next hearing.

Parvez Elahi signed the charge sheet while sitting in his vehicle due to security concerns.

The politician was accused of illegally approving various development schemes, causing over Rs1 billion in loss to the national exchequer.

The NAB, in its reference, also accused the PTI leader and his son Moonis Elahi of receiving bribes by awarding contracts to their favourite contractors in more than 200 development projects in the Gujrat district.

The reference mentioned that both politicians embezzled more than Rs1 billion as kickbacks.

The reference also said that Moonis deposited €1.61 million in his foreign bank account, while his family members deposited more than Rs304 million in their accounts.
