LAHORE: With the beginning of the holy month of Muharram, the possibility of two-day public holidays across the country is being expressed at the end of this month.

However, these holidays will be officially and finally announced only after the decision of the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee to sight the moon.

According to initial astronomical estimates and predictions of astronomers, 9th and 10th of Muharram, i.e. Ashura Day, is likely to fall on June 25 and 26, 2026.

The Government of Pakistan has declared 9th and 10th of Muharram as public holidays across the country, but the final confirmation of these dates will be possible only after the sighting of the moon of Muharram. An official notification will be issued by the federal government immediately after the sighting of the moon.

It should be noted that the federal government declares public holidays on 9th and 10th Muharram across the country, during which all government and private offices, banks and educational institutions remain completely closed.

According to the spokesperson of Suparco, the chances of sighting the Muharram moon on June 15 are very limited. It is likely that 30 days of Dhu al-Hijjah 1447 AH will be completed. Muharram 1 is expected to be on June 17. If Muharram 1 falls on June 17, then Ashura Day will be on Friday, June 26.
