MIRPUR KHAS: Four police personnel including Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) official, Hidyatullah Narejo, constables Nadir Arain, Qadir, and Farman, were granted a four-day remand in the killing of Umerkot doctor, Dr Shah Nawaz.

The investigating officer on Tuesday produced suspects in Mirpurkhas Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in the case of blasphemy suspect Dr. Shah Nawaz Kunbhar killing, who was encountered in Mirpurkhas.

The doctor hailing from Umerkot was shot dead by police in an alleged extra-judicial killing in Mirpurkhas on September 19, a day after being booked on allegations of blasphemy.

The suspects were suspended after social media was abuzz over Dr. Shah Nawaz’s killing in police custody. Following the incident, the CIA official and three constables went underground, however, Punjab police tracked them down and arrested them reportedly from Kasur district.

The ATC also remanded another nine suspects, arrested for their alleged involvement in rioting, creating a law and order situation, and other such offenses were also remanded in police custody for seven days.

Last month on Sep 27, the family of victim Dr Shahnawaz filed a first information report (FIR) against 45 suspects, including top police officials and a cleric, over his killing.

After the encounter, the body was handed over to the family for burial. However, they had to escape during the burial after a mob snatched the body, which they later burned.
