MUMBAI: BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla has indicated that Team India might travel to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy 2025, pending government approval, despite current uncertainties surrounding the visit.

Speaking at the ‘Uttar Pradesh Premier League players’ auction on Sunday, Shukla emphasized that the Indian cricket team’s trip to Pakistan for the tournament hinges on government authorization.

Regarding the potential withdrawal of Pakistan from the 2026 T20 World Cup, which is set to be hosted by India and Sri Lanka, Shukla noted that Pakistan is entitled to express its views, but the decision on participation depends on Indian government approval.

A senior BCCI official has acknowledged that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) might ‘retaliate’ if India decides not to travel to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy.

Additionally, he said “Certainly, we anticipate some form of retaliation. If we don’t visit Pakistan, they might threaten to boycott the Asia Cup. However, the PCB should understand that the decision is not solely in the BCCI’s hands.

Traveling to a foreign country requires permission from the Indian government. While we’ve had discussions about the Champions Trophy, there haven’t been any positive outcomes yet,” the official stated.

The Champions Trophy is scheduled to be held in Pakistan from February to March 2025. The uncertainty surrounding India’s participation has been a subject of debate since the announcement. The BCCI has reportedly requested the ICC to either relocate the tournament or arrange India’s matches at a neutral venue.

In response, the PCB has asked for written confirmation from the BCCI if the Indian government denies permission due to security concerns.

According to the tournament schedule, the Champions Trophy will begin in Karachi on February 19 and conclude with the final in Lahore on March 9, 2025, with additional matches in Rawalpindi. A reserve day for the final is set for March 10 in case of adverse weather.
