BHIMBER: All cigarette factories in Bhimber have been sealed during the Eid holidays as part of efforts to prevent the illegal transportation of cigarettes into Pakistan during the holiday period, Deputy Commissioner Inland Revenue Bhimber Circle Ali Asghar said in an official statement.
Addressing reports regarding the seizure of a Mazda truck loaded with non-duty-paid cigarettes in Gujrat, Ali Asghar clarified that the truck had been taken into custody by Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) officials on May 18 during an operation in Gujrat. He stated that the incident occurred before he assumed charge of his position.
According to the Deputy Commissioner, he officially took charge on May 19, and no such incident has been reported since then. He added that FBR authorities are currently investigating the matter and that he is also in contact with the relevant officials regarding the case.
The Deputy Commissioner further stated that if investigations establish links between the seized consignment and any cigarette factory operating in Bhimber, the concerned factory will be sealed immediately. He also warned that if any official of Azad Kashmir Inland Revenue is found involved in the matter, strict action would be taken, including dismissal from service.
According to sources, FBR Gujrat Inspector Kashif Gul, along with his team, intercepted the Mazda truck (registration number LES-4252) near Galyana during an operation. The seized cigarettes are estimated to be worth approximately Rs. 13.7 million.
Sources further claimed that the truck was carrying Rider and Champion cigarette brands. Investigators have reportedly raised suspicions regarding the invoice accompanying the consignment, alleging that the date mentioned on the invoice may have been tampered with. Sources also stated that the truck driver abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene during the operation.
