LAHORE: The Punjab government has decided to take strict action against individuals who litter in public places, including outside homes, shops and on roads, as part of efforts to strengthen the province’s cleanliness system.

The decision was discussed at a meeting chaired by Punjab Minister for Local Government Zeeshan Rafiq in Lahore on Friday. The meeting reviewed the collection of sanitation fees and considered punitive measures for spreading filth.

During a briefing by the Director General of the Suthra Punjab Authority, the minister stressed that stabilising and expanding an effective waste management system was essential for sustainable cleanliness across the province.

As per details, Officials informed the meeting that the minimum monthly sanitation fee in rural areas has been set at Rs200, while households in urban areas will be charged Rs300. Zeeshan Rafiq said the collection of sanitation fees would be carried out entirely through digital means to ensure transparency.

He announced that fines would be imposed on those found throwing garbage outside their homes, shops or on roads. He clarified that the purpose of penalties was not revenue generation but social reform and discouraging irresponsible behaviour.

Zeeshan directed the Suthra Punjab Authority to launch a comprehensive public awareness campaign. He said awareness camps would be set up alongside social media campaigns to educate citizens about cleanliness and their civic responsibilities.

The provincial government reiterated that public cooperation, along with strict enforcement, would be key to maintaining clean cities and villages across Punjab.
