LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has officially inaugurated the ‘Chief Minister Punjab Free Solar Panel Scheme‘ through a digital balloting process.
The scheme is aimed at providing free solar energy solutions to households to reduce power bills for low-income households.
Eligibility criteria are limited to households consuming up to 200 units of electricity a month. The scheme is receiving applications from over 861,000 consumers, while about 94,483 of these consumers will receive free solar systems where applicable. The processing of applications and installation shall be treated digitally.
In the first phase, 94,483 solar systems will be installed, out of which 47,182 are 0.55 kW and 47,301 are 1.1 kW. The installations are expected to start by the end of March and will be completed by the end of July.
In a bid to ensure transparency, the verification will be done by utilizing a reference number and CNIC number shown on the consumer’s monthly bill.
A helpline has also been set for guiding consumers who are to receive free solar panels. Furthermore, solar panels or inverters under the scheme will be linked with the computerized identity card of the consumer so that they will be insured against theft.
The scheme will generate a carbon reduction of 57,000 tonnes and also lessen the subsidy strain on the government at the centre.
