LAHORE: The Punjab government has approved a massive monthly ration card program aimed at supporting the working class, particularly industrial laborers.

The scheme, worth Rs. 40 billion, will benefit 1.25 million industrial workers across the province, providing them with much-needed financial assistance.

The program is set to be launched on May 1st by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. To fund the initiative, the Punjab government will allocate Rs. 20 billion, while the Labour Department and Social Security Department will each contribute Rs. 10 billion. The Bank of Punjab will be responsible for issuing the ration cards.

The exact monthly amount to be provided through the cards will be determined by the Punjab Cabinet, and legislation will be introduced to formalize the program.

The ration card will be issued in the name of the head of the household, benefiting over 8.4 million people in total. Notably, industrial workers already receiving assistance under the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) or other government grant schemes will also be eligible for this program, ensuring that those in need receive additional support.

This initiative is expected to bring significant relief to the working class in Punjab, improving their financial stability and access to essential goods.
