LAHORE: A newlywed couple, who married of their choice, was murdered in a suspected honour killing in the Chandrai Road area of Kot Lakhpat, Lahore on Friday.

The victims, identified as 22-year-old Izhar and 19-year-old Benish, hailed from Gilgit-Baltistan and were found dead in their rented flat. The couple had reportedly been estranged from their families after defying their traditional norms for their love marriage.

As per the initial investigation, Police said unidentified assailants entered the couple’s residence, subjected them to severe torture, and then slit their throats before fleeing the scene.

The incident came to light after neighbours reportedly noticed suspicious activity at the flat.

Upon receiving the information, police arrived and found that the victims had been tortured before their throats were slit. They collected evidence and transferred the bodies to the morgue for post-mortem via Edhi ambulances.

Police also revealed that both victims had moved to Lahore a few months ago after marrying against their families’ wishes. They had been residing near the girl’s uncle’s house.

Authorities recovered the suspected murder weapon from the scene and are using fingerprints found on it to identify the culprits.
