CHAK JHUMRAH: In a bizarre incident a cruel husband brunt his wife by pouring hot water on her body as a punishment for asking money to buy food for children in Punjab area Chak Jhumrah.
The husband identified as Shahid Ali Jatt, got angry upon his wife identified as Tahira Yasmeen asking for money and told her to fetch money from her brothers, and then he threw hot water on her body that burnt her severely. The right side of her body was burnt, and she was immediately taken to the hospital.
The couple, who have three kids together, has a history of domestic violence, with Shahid being physically and verbally abusive towards Tahira since their marriage in 2018.
According to the investigation reports failed to provide for her expenses, leaving her to struggle to make ends meet. On 17 December, Tahira asked Shahid to bring food for the children so she could send them to school, but he got angry and started beating her.
The police acted and registered a case against Shahid under the provisions of 336B PPC, and a search is underway to apprehend him. This incident brings forth the disturbing trend of domestic violence and abuse in our society, whereby women are subjected to the physical and emotional torture of husbands and in-laws.
Reports suggest that hundreds of women are being burnt alive annually by their husbands or their in-laws in Pakistan, and many others get injured and traumatized.
According to estimates, 300 women are burnt to death annually by their husband’s families. The incident is often portrayed as accidents like an ‘exploding stove’.
This incident reveals the vulnerabilities of women and girls in our society who are orphaned or on the fringes. Such incidents fringes. Such incidents must be stopped and preventable, and perpetrators of such crimes must be brought to book.
The government and civil society must collaborate in disseminating information about domestic violence and abuse providing help and protection to victims
