KARACHI: Electricity consumers across the country may soon face another financial burden as power tariffs are likely to increase by Rs 1.64 per unit under the monthly fuel adjustment mechanism.
According to sources, a request has been submitted to National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) seeking approval for the proposed hike. The application has been filed by Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) for the monthly fuel price adjustment for February 2026.
NEPRA is scheduled to conduct a hearing on the request on March 31, after which a final decision will be announced. If approved, the increase will be applicable to electricity consumers nationwide, including those in Karachi.
Currently, consumers are already bearing the impact of January’s monthly adjustment, under which electricity prices were increased by Rs 1.63 per unit. The continuation of such adjustments is adding pressure on households already struggling with inflation.
The monthly fuel cost adjustment is a routine process through which electricity tariffs are revised based on fluctuations in fuel prices and power generation costs. However, repeated increases have raised concerns among consumers about affordability and rising living costs.
If the latest proposal gets approval, it will mark yet another surge in electricity prices, further intensifying the financial strain on citizens across the country.
