MUZAFFARABAD: Security and law enforcement agencies have launched a major operation against a fake cigarette manufacturing and distribution network in Muzaffarabad, detaining several suspects and seizing a large quantity of weapons and communication equipment, according to sources.

Sources said a raid was conducted on a factory reportedly linked to Babar Taj, who is being described as a key figure in the fake cigarette business. Babar Taj was reportedly arrested during the operation.

According to sources, members of the Awami Action Committee’s core committee, including Anjum Zaman and Raja Sohaib, along with several other individuals, were also taken into custody for questioning.

Sources claimed that security personnel recovered a large number of firearms, walkie-talkies and other items during the raid. The recovery has prompted further investigations into the activities and possible connections of those detained.

Officials are reportedly examining links between the banned Public Action Committee and individuals associated with the fake cigarette network. Sources said the investigation is broad in scope and is focused on uncovering financial and operational connections.

Law enforcement agencies maintain that the operation was carried out on the basis of significant evidence collected during the course of the investigation, according to sources.

Investigators are continuing efforts to identify other alleged members, facilitators and financiers of the network. Sources indicated that information obtained from the arrested individuals could lead to additional arrests in the coming days.

The operation marks one of the most significant crackdowns against the alleged fake cigarette trade in Muzaffarabad, with further developments expected as the investigation progresses.
