KARACHI: In a shameful incident, a foreign couple who had cycled to Pakistan from 10 different countries were robbed by robbers in Sindh, it emerged on Sunday.

According to police, the couple, Polish nationals Kowalczyk Jakub Tomasz and Scantamburlo Marie Elisabeth, who hailed from France, were robbed near the Sujawal Bypass. The Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) said the thief deprived the foreign couple of their mobile phones.

The police have registered a first information report (FIR) on behalf of the state and have started an investigation into the incident.

However, an official of the Sindh Archaeology Department told a private news channel that the couple, who were visiting historical sites in the province, were robbed at Makli Graveyard, which houses around five million tombs and graves of royal family members, Sufi saints and others.

An assistant of the Archaeology Department confirmed that “the couple had stayed at Makli Graveyard last night [Saturday night] where the robbers robbed them.” They said the couple were guests of the provincial archaeology department.

The couple left for Hyderabad after the incident.

In early October, amid growing lawlessness in the city, robbers dressed in police uniforms robbed foreign tourists at Karachi’s Defence Housing Authority (DHA).

Police officials confirmed that four foreign tourists were robbed of $1,080 (Rs. 300,942) during the robbery near Khayaban-e-Mujahid.

The tourists, frustrated by the poor law and order situation in the city, left the country the next day without filing any complaints with the police.
