Four people lost life, several injured due to heavy rainfall in Lahore

LAHORE: Four people lost their lives and seven were injured due to heavy rain in Lahore. Whereas the new monsoon spell broke the 44-year rainfall record in the provincial capital.

A minor and five others were trapped when the roof of their deteriorating house near Baba Bulleh Shah Interchange collapsed, leading to the child’s death.

Additionally, electrocution incidents claimed the lives of three people across the city. Another roof collapse near Shaukat Khanum Chowk injured two people; one received first aid on-site while the other was taken to the hospital.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority reported that from June 30 to August 1, rains in Punjab resulted in 45 deaths and 132 injuries. During this period, 66 houses were damaged, and 39 head of cattle were killed.

Moreover, The city remained paralyzed until mid-afternoon as residents struggled to remove rainwater from their homes.

In Mughalpura, Tajpura, and Garhi Shahu, residents were out on the streets attempting to unclog sewers that had become blocked, likely due to garbage buildup. Throughout the city, numerous cars and motorcycles were observed stranded in various areas after breaking down as a result of the rain.

The downpour also impacted hospitals, with rainwater flooding the emergency departments and other wards at Services Hospital, General Hospital, and Mayo Hospital, damaging medicine and equipment. The parking lot at General Hospital was also submerged.

The situation worsened due to power outages, as 410 feeders of the Lahore Electric Supply Company (Lesco) tripped because of the rain. By 8 p.m., when this report was filed, power had still not been restored in some areas of the city.

Earlier, several deaths were recorded in KP due to violent rain and thunderstorms, whereas rainwater gushed into people’s houses damaging the infrasture.
