Gomal University’s major scandal of fake degrees and financial irregularities exposed

PESHAWAR: A major scandal of fake degrees and financial irregularities has been exposed in Gomal University in Dera Ismail Khan district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. It has been revealed that 514 suspicious degrees were issued. Key officers have been suspended in the fake degree case.

The provincial government’s accountability action in government universities has laid hands on the fake degree network. On the instructions of the provincial government, the Vice Chancellor of Gomal University took notice of the alleged irregularities of issuing 514 suspicious degrees for years. Additional Controller Muhammad Waseem and Director IT Riaz Ahmed have been suspended.

While further action is expected. A high-level investigation is also underway into the allegations of financial irregularities in Gomal University from 2019 to 2023. Hundreds have been declared suspicious in the official records. The cancellation of degrees has been recommended, while a new investigation committee has been formed for the inquiry.

On the instructions of Minister for Higher Education Meena Khan Afridi, surveillance in higher educational institutions has been tightened. Meena Khan Afridi says that the elements involved in the Gomal University scandal will not be spared under any circumstances. The higher education system will be cleansed of corruption and fake degree mafia.
