Govt announces public holiday on May 01, notification issued

ISLAMABAD: May 1 is observed annually as International Labour Day (also known as May Day or Workers’ Day) in Pakistan and many countries worldwide, honoring workers’ rights and contributions.

It is an official public holiday with government offices, banks, and educational institutions remaining closed. Each year, Pakistan observes an official holiday on May 01; schools and banks all remain closed during this day.

Early Salary Distribution

The Punjab government has announced early salary disbursement for its employees ahead of the Labour Day holiday.

The new payment schedule will deliver salaries to workers on April 30 instead of their regular payment date, which falls on the first day of each month. Government employees will receive their payments before the upcoming extended weekend through this decision.

The Finance Department worked with official sources to move the date forward because May 1 is a public holiday. The early salary payment from Punjab will provide financial relief to thousands of provincial workers. Authorities confirmed that the holiday period continues because May 3 will fall on a weekend.

Employees receive a three-day break because Friday is a public holiday and Saturday and Sunday follow it. The Punjab Finance Department established official orders for processing payments on time to avoid any financial disruptions.

The early salary payment from Punjab shows the government’s dedication to supporting its workers. Officials declared that the administration considers salary distribution before consecutive holiday periods to be its most important task.

The government has implemented an austerity program throughout the province in addition to providing this financial assistance.

The government will deduct two days of salary from BS-17 officers and higher ranks for their April 2026 payroll. The funds will be allocated directly to the Prime Minister’s Austerity Fund 2026.

The Chief Minister and provincial ministers have decided to forgo their April and May salaries. The established measures provide necessary support to employees while maintaining fiscal responsibility and sustaining economic stability.
