ISLAMABAD: The Government of Pakistan has made progress on regulating dual citizenship for public officials, with a draft of new rules submitted to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for approval.

According to reports, the Establishment Division prepared the proposed framework in light of recommendations from the Secretaries Committee, suggesting key amendments to existing service rules.

Under the draft, all government employees will be required to disclose their own and their family members’ dual citizenship or green card status within three months. A formal declaration will be mandatory, with strict action proposed in case of non-compliance.

The new rules also propose that officials who already hold dual citizenship may retain it. However, in the future, prior government approval will be required before acquiring any additional citizenship.

For diplomats, the policy takes a stricter stance. A complete ban on dual citizenship has been proposed for Pakistani diplomats serving abroad. Under the amendments, ambassadors would be required to renounce dual nationality during their tenure, with the option to regain it after retirement.

Sources indicate that senior officials, including the Secretary of the Establishment Division, have supported tighter restrictions on high-ranking officers to safeguard state interests.

If approved, the new rules are expected to enhance transparency, accountability, and regulatory oversight within the civil service structure.
