ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Energy has rejected reports about shutting down electricity subsidies for consumers who use up to 200 units.

The ministry said it does not plan to adjust the current subsidy policy, or really tamper with it in any direct way. At the same time, DISCOs began checking consumers across Pakistan.

They mainly leaned on households with multiple meters, or homes where solar systems are installed, and yes, in some places, even more than one setup is being cited.

The officials said they wanted to spot any possible misuse, like the relief being used in a way it wasn’t meant to be used. Also, sources mentioned that in some instances, there is irregular use of the relief.

Authorities, meanwhile, used QR codes to verify billing and consumer data, those small codes that link back to records. Sources added that low-use consumers currently get roughly Rs. 5,000 as monthly relief.

They warned that removing the subsidy could push bills from about Rs. 2,000 up to something near Rs. 7,000, and that would be noticeable. However, a ministry spokesperson denied every claim.

He said the government does not consider ending subsidies for consumers using up to 200 units. He further clarified that QR codes only display subsidy details; they do not show or signal a policy change.

He also said the government will not withdraw relief for households with separate portions, or for multiple family units living in one house. Finally, the ministry said it wants to protect consumers, and it confirmed the subsidy system will keep providing relief across the country, without ending it.
